IAmA Holt

Our facebook poll has spoken! Some folks wanted Holt's day in the life, others wanted backstory, so here's 'his life in a day' so to speak. This was supposed to be a sketch, but between you and I, I put a bit more work into it as the old man's my favorite character in all this.

It's vague, I know, but don't want to betray his entire character so soon as he grows with his charges over the course of the campaign and they find out a bit more about him in turn.

In any case, this week we'll be running an IAmA for the old coot, so feel free to ask questions and receive bolt rounds answers.

@Hieranonymus : "absolutely unremarkable"

January 24th, 2016, 3:42 pm

@peachpunk: Unsanctioned access of Commissariat Schola records is punishable by 50 lashes and assignment to a penal battalion. In this case, however, I shall make an exception. Your summary execution has been scheduled for.... now.

#1: If Holt were a vegetable, what would he be?

January 18th, 2016, 3:01 pm

1. A potato. It thrives in harsh climates and can be mashed, boiled, baked or fried, and yet it retains all nutritional value and flavor. I admire your curiosity about vegetables. As a reward, you are assigned to peeling duty until further notice.

2. I am loyal to one mistress. War. She is insatiable.

January 18th, 2016, 11:18 am

1. What pattern of bolt pistol do you recommend?

2. If you could exterminatus one planet, which and why?

3. Who makes your hats?

January 18th, 2016, 3:08 pm

1. This is a difficult question. My bolt pistols are like my children. I love them all. If I had to choose, it would be the Mauler pattern from Cinder Crag Forge.

Don't look at me like that, Garm Pattern. I love you, too.

2. Somewhere scenic and peaceful, but strategically insignificant. Peace is the most grievous lie.

3. They usually come from the Departmento Petasus, but as supply lines are strained, I have taken to tailoring my own. I am a registered Sartorus journeyman.

What is Holt's favorite brand of recaf?

January 18th, 2016, 3:10 pm

@Garrot: *stops sipping recaf, blinks*
There... there are multiple kinds?

The Throne blesses us. This is an auspicious day. *drinks more recaf to celebrate*

January 18th, 2016, 3:57 pm

@peachpunk: Ok listen very carefully this is a very delicate situation you are curently into so you must do as I say. First, press Alt+F4.

January 18th, 2016, 4:08 pm

January 19th, 2016, 8:52 am

@peachpunk: *Sips recaf and just watches* Carry on, Junior Commissar.

January 18th, 2016, 3:45 pm

Any thought on some of the imperium's most famous commissars such as Sebastian Yarrick, Ciaphas Cain or Ibram Gaunt? Oh while we'e at it if you have any thoughts on officers outside of the commissariat could you add them too?

PS: After these few answers I understand why Holt is your favorite character.

January 18th, 2016, 4:48 pm

@Metal C0Mmander: Actually I have a couple more questions so I might as well ask them too.

1: Any particuliarly memorable executions during your carrer.

2: Who do you expect will die first amongst Talon's squad beside Kosomov the obvious choice.

3: Any particuliarly efficient tactics to keep morals high and defeat the enemies of mankind?

4: And finally any memorable battle with a space marine chapter an ally?

January 19th, 2016, 10:26 am

@Metal C0Mmander: Ah, more questions I see. Careful, the ordos is always recruiting.

1. Yes, several. I suppose the one that comes to mind foremost was not so much an execution as it was a surprise birthday party. I had been doing the rounds in my early twenty-fifth year when I found a trooper relieving himself on the side of a chimera. Naturally, I marched him out and made an example of him. Imagine my surprise when colored paper and candy burst from his ruptured skull.

Turns out it was a servitor that had been packed with confetti, dressed in fatigues and ordered to cause trouble. Cake was served later, followed by a tribunal and additional executions.

2. I expect little from them, I hope for much.

3. Dry socks, boiled water, the occasional warm meal, and strategically applied bolter rounds.

4. I have witnessed the astartes before, though I have never served beside them.

January 21st, 2016, 12:30 am

@Fenstrum: Ah well if the inquisition comes calling I will have no options but to answer. It is the duty of every imperial citizen to try and acomplish the best of itself while accepting the hardships this will bring just as the emperor desire.

But you have not quite answered my question. You hope for your charges but still must expect some or most if not all of them will make the ultimate sacrifice. So do you believe will do first. My money's on Sir Nathanial will run out of men under his command eventually, Talon will end up taking a knife in the back or Mattheus will charge into a minefield no matter the other options. Or perhaps it will be sir won't stop asking dumb questions and will end up wasting someone powerful's time.

January 19th, 2016, 9:46 am

@Metal C0Mmander:

Commissar Commander Ibram Gaunt was a wise tactician and a shrewd leader. Few commissars possess the breadth of ability or wit to follow in his footsteps, though many still try.

Commissar Yarrick is, of course, a living legend. I wish him good health in his retirement and victory when he's inevitably dragged out of it again.

Commissar Cain is an excellent entertainer and recruiter. I liked the book more.

January 18th, 2016, 9:26 pm

(Are there any guardsmen or guard regiments that you've actually been honored to serve with?)

January 19th, 2016, 1:15 am

@Allsmiles: I did a tour with the Terrax Guard at the start of my service. Those troops were the closest thing to Space Marines you will see this side of mortality. I say were, because by the conclusion of the campaign all of them had given their souls to the Emperor's care, unflinchingly. All other guardsmen must pale in comparison.

(Err, not actually Holt, just an overenthusiastic fan... I'll be out of here before I'm executed for impersonating the Lord Commissar!)

January 19th, 2016, 10:40 am

@Militant "Roach" Callan: I'm merely a Commissar, no additional titles.

Are you of the Harper-Drungstern Holts? I should petition the administratum for a proper copy of the family tree, perhaps my grandchildren may live to see it delivered.

January 19th, 2016, 11:35 am

@Fenstrum: I should be so lucky. Theoretically I suppose it's possible. I have filed a request with Excubitos for information regarding my ancestry, but a humble Stormtrooper's wants amount to very little in the grand mechanism of the Administratum. I suppose it enforces proper humility. One should be regarded less for their ancestry and more for their service to the Emperor.

Enough of my chattering, though. Let me ask you- which of the branches of the most holy Inquisition does Holt appreciate the most?

January 19th, 2016, 10:35 am

@Allsmiles: While I admire the vigour the Catachans possess, there's nothing quite like serving beside Kriegers. Never have I gotten so much reading done.

January 19th, 2016, 5:34 am

So he survived being assigned to a Catachan regiment... No wonder he fights dirty. :)

January 19th, 2016, 10:43 am

@Jasin Moridin: It's best to save courtesy for the ballrooms.

January 19th, 2016, 12:30 pm

Uh, Gooday Commissar. Some of the boys in the trenches told me some stories about your past, and I wanted to know if they were true.

Firstly, Did you really take on a lictor all by yourself, behind enemy lines, armed with nothing more than an empty bolt pistol and faith in the throne? Also, are your scars a result of this event?

Secondly, were you really the re-caf chugging champion of Agrellan before it fell?

Lastly, is that picture of you above this post a propaganda piece, or your actual origin story? I don't see any lictors or recaf championships in it...

January 19th, 2016, 12:35 pm

1. I see the Junior Commissar has been busy.

2. Very busy.

3. *looks over his shoulder* Oh. When did that get there? ...Seems accurate enough, if not slightly abridged.

January 19th, 2016, 5:45 pm

@Fenstrum: One thing that a colleague of mine commented was that Commissar Yarrick once executed an inquisitor for heresy. Have you ever found a situation where your sword had found such a target and your word put in such doubt due to the light it was put against?

January 19th, 2016, 12:36 pm

It's true to the word, white shield's honor!

January 20th, 2016, 8:07 pm

Sir! I apologize for taking your time but I have a request. Could you do something about my squad's Tech-Priest? I keep waking up finding the man hovering over me, staring at me. It's starting to get disconcerting...

January 24th, 2016, 8:13 am

@Kara MacGuyver: I would first suggest checking under your pillow for anything out of place. Perhaps he left his spanner there while replacing a shorted lumen. The servants of the omnissiah are often quite reserved and it is likely that he simply doesn't wish to disturb your rest by retrieving his tool. If you return his spanner and this behaviour continues, however, I recommend filing form TGH-004 with your nearest administratum office, nominating him for an immediate attitude readjustment and chem geld.

January 24th, 2016, 7:45 am

Questions sir!

1. Any funny or embarrassing moments from your time at your Schola Progenium you'd share with us?

2. What is the most glorious way you've seen a Guardsman die?

3. I've lived longer than the 17 hour life expectancy of a Guardsman am I doing something wrong?

January 24th, 2016, 8:23 am

@Hieranonymus : 1. My time at the schola was absolutely unremarkable. At no point was I subjected to atomic wedgies, swirlies, nookies, Catachan arm burn, or wet-willies. Entirely unmemorable.

2. All guardsmen who die with their lasgun in hand, trained on their foe, die gloriously. It would be rude of me, and frankly impossible, to pick just one instance.

3. This is indeed most unusual. I would suggest notifying your nearest commissar and bringing up your concern and remember, if he reaches for his sidearm, do not run. That's how he determines whether to note your casualty as a loyalist or defector.

January 24th, 2016, 11:39 pm

Sir, if I may ask. What is your opinion on Ogryns and Ratlings? Only, I've had to deal with both in the recent past, and I was hoping for your wisdom...

January 24th, 2016, 11:50 pm

Sir! Questions for you, Mister Commissar, Sir!

1. How many Junior Commissars do you generally have working under you?

2. Are there any particular foes you're especially satisfied to have delivered the Emperor's Justice to?

3. What is your opinion with regards to non-standard weapons used in the course of annihilating the Emperor's enemies? Er, no, nothing heretical, maybe just a shotgun that...might have had its paperwork misfiled, or something.

January 25th, 2016, 2:37 am

Mister Holt one last question for the road? Out of the infinitudes of xeno races across the galaxy wich one is your most hated and why.

January 31st, 2016, 4:27 am

@peachpunk: Not even in flashbacks can we see Holt's right eye! (Also, gonna get executed for this but that's adorable!)
