Bi-weekly updates for August.

Troops section in progress!

Eagle Ordinary

I could use a caff-priest at the moment too

Hey guys, ya'll have probably noticed I haven't been updating like usual. Pardon my lack of activity, I've been pulling 70-80 hours weeks between day job and night job. 90% of the work done on this strip was done by dragging myself out of bed earlier than usual to go work at it at the coffee shop so I wouldn't feel guilty not plugging away on client work.

On the other hand, you might have noticed some of my work on the new Shadespire site, so that's super cool! With any luck you'll be seeing some more of my stuff here and there, and comic updates. The next while's going to be a little rough for me, so expect me to be a little infrequent- but that said, Richard only just came up for a visit to properly flesh out the next chapter, and we're both really excited to get it out there. When is the only question.

To those reading this, thanks for sticking around! It's always the highlight of my week whenever I get time to work on this project. I do miss this particular weekly toil.

Oh, and shout-out to GalooGameLady for letting me steal her bab for another quick cameo, and to Misslol for the same.<3

@Gubbinz: recaf is tea.

October 13th, 2017, 4:37 pm

@Mgspecter: I think that it can be both, actually. It's just any fluid with caffeine in it (which would mostly be teas, of course, but coffee is also possible; there are presumably bizarre caffeinated suspensions that we would recognize as neither tea nor coffee...).

October 13th, 2017, 5:15 pm

@Montagnard: Dan Abnett apparently describes how to make it thusly:

Brew a pot of tea
Empty the water out of your coffee maker
Dump the tea in the coffee maker reservoir
Brew coffee, using tea instead of water
Enjoy your recaff.
The end result of this is that you end up with a super-caffeinated beverage, combining the two limbs of the evolutionary tree that both produce caffeine. Recaf ends up tasting somehow like both, and yet neither at the same time. Regardless of which one you think, it will still unfortunately make all coffee you make from now on taste suspiciously like tea.

October 15th, 2017, 10:01 pm

@peachpunk: I am disgusted by that method of making coffee but because I'll never try it I'll never know if it's righteous disgust. Oh well that amount of caffeine is probably not safe for regular consumption anyway.

October 15th, 2017, 1:20 am

@Montagnard: given that there are specific examples of tea in the setting (Tanna, for example), i've generally assumed 'recaf' is basically a coffee substitute with synthetic caffeine added in.. a "re-caffeinated" drink. since most coffee substitutes lack caffeine, adding it in would make it closer to coffee, without any actual coffee being involved.
and given the sheer size of the Imperium's armed forces, (or their working classes) it would make sense that they'd largely be using the cheaper substitutes like roasted acorn, barley, Chockory, etc. than actual coffee beans. and since caffeine can be manufactured industrially from fairly easy to obtain chemicals, synthetic caffeine would be easy for them to make and distribute for addition to any liquid they want to employ.

October 16th, 2017, 8:50 pm

@mithril: Really, when you get right down to it, the only real difference between tea and coffee is that one is a leaf and one is a bean. I feel like the Imperium makes a drinkable out of pretty much anything that you can A) fit in a cup and B) at hot water too without it making a chemical eruption.

Best. Tec-support. EVER.

October 9th, 2017, 10:12 am

Ciaphas is that you?

October 9th, 2017, 10:18 am

The wait was well worth it. Thank you for all you put up with so we can have the best comic on the voxnet.

October 9th, 2017, 11:05 am

Which is worse for the guardsman; to be judged or the waiting?
Then again the Priesthood of Mars is not going to be happy to hear of brutal Inquisitors beating on their machines (regardless of if that's what they will do in the end, whilst chanting the holy words "This one again? Damn it, why isn't it working this time?")

"Catachan parts! Valhallan parts! All made on Vostroya! *clank, clank, KATHUNK*"

Gotta love the RPGs. Technical Knock was my favourite perk.

October 9th, 2017, 12:56 pm

Holy cow, 70-80 hours a week is crazy! There's no need to say sorry or anything, work stuff's gotta come first. This comic could update once every other month or less and I'd still be a huge fan (I'm a hardened TF2 comic fan; no hiatus shall break me!). :D

Also I love Coggy with my whole entire heart, oh my god. <3 I need one.

Welcome back!

Percussive Maintenance, best maintenance.

October 9th, 2017, 2:36 pm

@LTenhet: The Rites of Percussive Maintenance is by far the most reliable and efficient way to appease the Machine Spirit

October 10th, 2017, 12:56 am

@Sarukin: Sometimes works on the most disagreeable.

October 9th, 2017, 3:08 pm

It sucks, but we can go without comics for a while, look after yourself first, get some sleep and relax :)

October 10th, 2017, 1:42 am

Holy Throne, 80 hours!? You are getting paid right?

I confess that Holt is my favorite character, I love how you make him both old and weary-looking yet also commanding and badass at the same time. I get the impression that he either opted out of rejuvenation treatments or is at least 200 years old. If he's doomed to die I hope he goes out in a blaze of Commissariat wrath and firepower.

Missed this comic a lot (I discovered it back in early July, when I was depressed owing to a recent job loss and it really helped cheer me up); glad you are back, though I wish the charecters section was completed. Any updates on that?

This is my favorite webcomic, thank you so much for gracing us with your story and awesome art. The Emperor protects! Don't stop!

October 10th, 2017, 2:47 pm

I really like this page! The first panel shows so much atmosphere, really well done!

Also, take care of yourself, take some free time if you need it. I'll appreciate every page, but understand the time these take. Keep up the great work, and take your time!

October 15th, 2017, 1:04 am

I always thought Recaf was called that cuz it was Reconstituted Caffiene byproduct. Like, it's 40K's version of that really low tier garbage freeze-dried coffee, only it's already been used once, so it's literally 'Re' in every sense of the word.

Like, you can get Caff which is normal coffee...but Recaf is reused old caf that's been repurposed for the Guard. Save a few crown.

Anyone wanna tell me where I can find Peachpunks work on the Shadespire site? Also where I can find the Shadespire site?

Also, loving the comic! Cant wait for the continuation but do it in your own time. Rather read it in a slow pace than for you to crash and burn like Taus in close combat.

I love how this comic portrays the commissariat as more like actual regular people doing their jobs as officers instead of as the clinically insane team-killing duty-or-death psychopaths that a lot of casual Warhammer fans seem to think they are.
